Contrapositive & Ergodicity

As I force my sloppy mind to be sharper than ever, I rely on two distinct but complementary tools to clarify decisions and their implications: the contrapositive and ergodicity.


#1 Contrapositive as a Thinking Tool

Take the statement: "If it is raining, then the ground is wet" (If X, then Y). Its contrapositive is: "If the ground is not wet, then it isn't raining" (If not Y, then not X).

Logically, "If X, then Y" is strictly equivalent to "If not Y, then not X."Flipping the problem is often more straightforward. It forces your attention onto necessary conditions rather than sufficient-sounding fluff.

So instead of asking, "How do I succeed?", ask, "What guarantees failure?"


#2 Ergodicity as a Thinking Tool

In mathematics, a process is ergodic if the time average along a single trajectory equals the ensemble average. This is rare, as most real-world human systems are non-ergodic, meaning individual paths diverge wildly from group averages.

Suppose we play Russian Roulette for $10 m. We put one bullet in a six-chamber revolver, and take turns pulling the trigger until one of us dies.

If I pull the trigger first:

  • Chance I die: ~54%

  • Chance I survive and win: ~45%

If I enter this game relying on the ensemble average (expected value), I might calculate my expected payoff as:

5/11 × 10,000,000 ≈ $4.55m .

However, as a single trajectory in this system, I either get the full $10 million, or I am dead. That imaginary $4.55 million is never realized. It exists only if you average the outcomes of thousands of different people playing the same game—not for any single person living through it.

In non-ergodic games, the outcome is usually the full prize or irreversible ruin. The group average (%) is meaningless for a single person experiencing repeated exposure. A 5-in-6 survival rate works for a crowd, but not for one continuous life. In short, when statistics say "you’ll probably be fine," that is true for a crowd. It is false for me as an individual—it only takes one loaded chamber to end my life.

This is why the ergodicity assumption breaks down in most real-world scenarios (stock markets, extreme sports, …). Strategies that look tempting on paper for a crowd can be disastrous for the individual who actually has to walk the path. We want to, we will take risk, just never step into the arena with the wrong math in mind.


#3 Their Relevance in Decision-Making

These are ultimate tools to fix a mushy mind under uncertainty. Ergodicity teaches you that in non-ergodic system, believing on "positive expected value" is a fatal trap. Meanwhile, the contrapositive clarifies the logic of asking what ends the game and neutralizing those specific risks (If not Y, then not X), supplying a disciplined framework to build safeguards.


So my dear, use them together to sharpen your judgment in any domain where we only have one life, one trajectory to play out.
